Graven Image
by Richard Whincop
The title “Graven Image” refers to the age-old debate about the use of images in Christian worship: whether they are aids to meditation or become objects of veneration in themselves. The late medieval sculpture of the crucifixion is in Bayeux Cathedral in Normandy. The cracks & stains in its surface show that it is subject to the ravages of time, yet the two contemporary figures still seem captivated by its presence. To the viewer they could also suggest the figures of Mary Magdalene and St. John the Evangelist, often depicted at the foot of the cross in a crucifixion scene, as though the sculpture inspires these onlookers to imagine themselves to be truly present at the scene.
Benedicite Murals
The Sanctuary walls are covered with 14 panels depicting the Benedicite, painted by William Hole RSA in 1901-1902 and donated by Robert Ogg.
Some of the paintings are set in contemporary scenery with factories and a steam locomotive.
Stained Glass
St Ninian's has a collection of stained glass windows to equal many cathedrals.
The Apse is dominated by 5 large windows depicting major biblical events from the Temptation of Eve, the Annunciation, the Birth, Life, Death, Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus and of the Disciples preaching the Gospel and healing the sick.
