Growing in Faith

A living relationship with God is never static.  We all need time to think, talk, study, question,  pray, and reflect on our experiences.

This page lists some of the ongoing opportunities to grow in faith at St Ninian's, and includes links to sets of sermons on Bible Basics, the Holy Week Liturgy, Prayer, and Poetry in Advent.

Bible Study

There is a Contextual Bible Study on the second Tuesday of the month between October and May.  Further information can be found here.

If you would like a general introduction to the bible, you will find the rector's sermons on Bible Basics here:

Old Testament Basics

1.  Why Bother with the Old Testament?

2.  The Prophets

3.  History Books

4. Wisdom

5.  Old Testament Theology

New Testament Basics

1.  The Birth of the New Testament

2.  Gospels & Acts

Journey of Faith

A group of people meet on the first Monday of every month to discuss aspects of faith.  Recently the group has been reading 'Tough Talk':  one of the York Courses.

Liturgy

We learn about the liturgy primarily by engaging with it week after week, so that the words, actions, and rhythms of the church year can sink deep inside us.  But sometimes it helps to step back and think about why we do what we do.

The following set of sermons considers the history and symbolism of the Holy Week liturgies, tracing the journey from Palm Sunday to Easter Day.

Journey through Holy Week

Prayer

Last autumn, the rector and curate led a series of sermons called Time to Pray.  Each week we considered a different method of prayer, and offered a card to help people to pray at home. The sermons and prayer cards are linked here:

week 1 -- What is Prayer

week 2 -- Praying with the Church: Daily Prayer

week 3 -- Praying with Scripture: Lectio Divina

week 4 -- Praying for Others: Intercession

week 5 -- Praying with Scripture:  Using Imagination

week 6 -- Seeing God in our own Lives

Poetry

In Advent, the curate did a series of sermons on poetry.  Sermons, notes and poems are linked below.

Advent1 -- Annunciation
'Annunciation' -- R. M. Rilke

'The Annunciation' -- Edwin Muir

Advent 2 -- Who is this?
'What Child is This?' -- J. Jenkins

'Mary's Lament' -- M. Arthurson

Advent 3 -- Longing

'The Oxen' -- Thomas Hardy

Advent 4 -- Coming
